HER STORY
VERONICA NUNMARIE HILL
BIOGRAPHY
NunMarie is a multidisciplinary artist, photographer, and writer based in Central Texas. She is currently completing her Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies at Texas A&M University–Central Texas, with concentrations in Visual Arts, English, and Psychology. Her practice integrates photography, mixed media, and text to explore identity, presence, and the ways individuals navigate cultural, spiritual, and psychological landscapes.
Working through portraiture and documentary-based approaches, Hill examines vulnerability and self-construction, inviting viewers to consider how meaning is shaped through lived experience and visual narrative. Her work is grounded in an ongoing exploration of hybridity, belonging, and the layered histories that emerge from intersecting cultural identities.
As a mother, Hill’s practice is deeply informed by lived experiences of care, generational memory, and the negotiation of personal and communal identity. Drawing from her blended heritage, she engages themes of embodiment, symbolism, and spiritual storytelling across photographic and mixed-media forms.
Hill has exhibited throughout Central Texas, including solo and juried exhibitions at the Cultural Activities Center and the Michael Donahue Gallery, as well as the Central Texas Art Competition and Exhibition. In 2024, she presented her solo exhibition Bendición & Glory Child, a self-portrait documentary series exploring Catholic symbolism, femininity, and spiritual narrative. Her work has received multiple honors, including Awards of Excellence in the Central Texas Art Competition, as well as national recognition for her poetry and design work.
In addition to her studio practice, Hill works in arts administration and gallery management, contributing to curatorial operations, visual documentation, and public interpretation. This dual role informs a practice attentive not only to image-making, but also to context, audience, and the ethical dimensions of representation within exhibition spaces.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I have encountered chaos in its rawest form. In moments of deep reflection, isolation, and prayer I have discovered peace in my creativity and an unparalleled beauty in the power of imagination. I am influenced by my Catholic faith; I recognize the Divine Presence in the darkest corners of my life and how it has transformed my solitude from a state of abandonment to a space of sacred communion. My work explores the duality of spirituality and sensuality. My photographs preserve the memories of my own difficulties, to give voice to the silent struggles and the unspoken fears of those who walk alone. Consequently, my art is not just a reflection of my experiences but also a celebration of divine companionship.
Through my artwork I have the power to control moments of vulnerability. My work displays a variety of digital and film photographs. Though the methodology of my work has shifted and is always evolving, one aspect that remains consistent is my connection to self-portraiture- to be on both sides of the lens is powerful. While most of my work consists of portraits that require a set-up, other images are captured less rigorously with camera-in-hand. Whatever the method used, my artistic choices reflect my emotional state and my environment. I especially favor natural and warm ambient light. Whether editing meticulously on a monitor or immersing myself in the traditional darkroom process, I imbue each piece with authenticity and resonance. Each time I do so, I refine my visual language and offer new perspectives.
My journey as an artist is a testament to the power of the human spirit, to find beauty and meaning even in the darkest experiences. I pray to emerge stronger, wiser, and more compassionate. Bendición embodies the joys found in faith, the beauty in resilience, and the reassurance that even in our most isolated moments, we are blessed and supported by someone greater than ourselves.
